PR: Green Generation partnership sets new standard of excellence for Environmental Education in Myanmar

Nay Pyi Taw, August 12 - Today, on International Youth Day, Department of Basic Education of the Ministry of Education and Environmental Conservation Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation signed a Letter of Agreement to work together on Environmental Education.

The Green Generation Environmental Education partnership, supported by Save the Children and WWF, will set a new standard of excellence for Environmental Education in schools by pairing project-based learning and 21st century skills with environmental conservation knowledge and practices.


The Green Generation Environmental Education pilot will be rolled out as an extracurricular activity in 130 primary and middle schools in Kayah state, Magway Region and Tanintharyi Region with the aim to provide the clubs in all schools across the country within the next five years. 


As educators, we must prepare children for a future defined by the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation. The Green Generation clubs will encourage children to identify and solve environmental problems through real-world action, ensuring our children are equipped to deal with environmental problems within their communities, for their country, and throughout the world,” said U Ko Lay Win, Director General of Department of Basic Education. 


The curriculum includes topics on why nature matters, forests and deforestation, wildlife, waste and litter, and water pollution. 


As the world moves in to the post COVID-19 recovery phase, the need for nationwide Environmental Education has never been more critical. The Green Generation clubs will embed an understanding of the value of nature into our next generation of Myanmar’s leaders, and future custodians of this planet,” said U Hla Maung Thein, Director General of Environmental Conservation Department. 


The Green Generation club curriculum will reinforce the child-centred reforms that the Ministry of Education has undertaken in the National Education Strategic Plan, support the action plan of the ASEAN Working Group on Environmental Education and align with the Myanmar Sustainable Development Plan. 


The teachers and Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members will facilitate the activities and will follow the pandemic guidance that was announced by the government.
